I am just getting started at this Charter business, although I have been taking people fishing for twenty-eight years. I love to see fish coming into the boat. I love the fun and good times that people have when they are out fishing and enjoying the water. That's why I am going to do this as a career and why I know you will enjoy going out in the good boat "Mystress" Why am I fishing out of Hoonah? There are very few people over here compared to Juneau. The people I have met here are friendly and easy going. Hoonah sits right on Icy Strait and all the fish coming into the inside waters up here, swim right by Hoonah. I will however, book trips out of Juneau given plenty of notice. Call or e-mail me. Going fishing is all about having a great time and part of that is knowing you are safe. I have had this boat out in some very rough conditions and know her great seaworthiness. Of course I will not take out guests if the water is too rough. I have been seasick and had to endure being out in rough water until my charter captain decided to head us back in. I did not have a good time. I will not do that to my guests. That is one reason my wife and I decided to move here. We have an ocean without ocean swells and do not get seasick. Sometimes a big wind kicks up and there is a wind/tide swell running. We do not go out in excessive conditions. If we need to give refunds, we will. Often however, there may be a calm bay to go to that has a bunch of fish in it. (That we'll do!) We just want everyone to have a good trip!

This 26 foot Hewescraft is a great fishing platform. Captain Byrd is licensed by the U.S Coast Guard and the state of Alaska

She rides smooth and gets to the fishing spot quickly. She has a toilet closet (Head) and a warm, dry cabin. You will enjoy fishing in this boat, I am sure.We are Coast Guard inspected and have all safety gear aboard. I can write your fishing license right on the boat, (pay with cash or check) or pay with credit card prior to boarding.

"Mystress" is equipted with a 250 hp Suzuki 4-stroke outboard. She's fast, quiet and has very little vibration.(You can actually have a conversation while underway!) The big bench seats allow you to stretch out and be comfy. We have plenty of water on-board an usually a little something to snack on.You are welcome to bring food and beverage of your own on the boat as we will have coolers and ice. I know that some people must have a beer to fish and that is okay, but there will be no excessive drinking on-board. Safety is important to having a good trip. For that reason, the Capt. never drinks on-board.(Now back at the dock in the evening......)

We have all the tackle and bait you'll need

We have quality rods and reels. You will not have to fish with a dirty or hard functioning reel. You are welcome to bring your own gear if you wish. We usually troll and we may use fresh herring, hoochies, flashers, plugs, spoons, whatever is getting fish. Mooching is a possability and if the party wants to fly fish and they bring they're own fly fishing gear, we can do that. Call or e-mail me if you have any questions.

There are very often whales in sight, just about everwhere we fish. Seals and sea lions often stop by and occasionally will steal a fish (But not often) Orca's may move in and put all the fish down. We then just go somewhere else (After we get some pictures) Eagles are a daily occurance and there are many seabirds around always. We even see otters sometimes.

We do eco-tours on request. There is so much to see and do up here that is like no-where else I have been. We have a great population of humpback whales up here all summer long. They are here for the same reason we are. Fishing is good and the water is clean and calm. We often see them breaching (Jumping) or bubble feeding, or just lolling around on the surface, soaking up some sun.
